[00:00:00] [SPEAKER_00]: It is Monday, September 16th. Today a huge sea change in how consumers find deals could change where you spend your at dollars and Google isn't going to like it
[00:00:12] [SPEAKER_00]: Made up changes its mind on a big policy and you aren't going to like it and hope you've got backups for those backups
[00:00:18] [SPEAKER_00]: What's behind the mass failing of thousands of hard drives? I'm Tod Maffin, that's ahead today in Digital Marketing
[00:00:29] [SPEAKER_00]: Consumers are no longer relying on search engines to find special offers online and in stores
[00:00:35] [SPEAKER_00]: Instead, 44% of American consumers now say they discover deals through in store advertising
[00:00:42] [SPEAKER_00]: Or ads on the retailer's own website
[00:00:46] [SPEAKER_00]: This number jumps to 51% in the UK
[00:00:50] [SPEAKER_00]: The study by Kovio Research also found that email is still a popular way to find deals 36% of consumers turning to their online inboxes
[00:01:00] [SPEAKER_00]: This shift in discovery of course could impact where we digital advertisers spend our money this holiday season
[00:01:05] [SPEAKER_00]: It also found that 59% of shoppers plan to cut everyday purchases to prioritize gifting budgets
[00:01:12] [SPEAKER_00]: Advertisers may focus on platforms like Instagram, where 35% of survey respondents say they find deals
[00:01:19] [SPEAKER_00]: Gen Z and millennials are most likely to discover deals on social media at 65% and 50% respectively
[00:01:26] [SPEAKER_00]: Also, spontaneous purchases are on the rise
[00:01:30] [SPEAKER_00]: 45% of consumers say fashion, shoes and apparel are their top online impulse buy
[00:01:36] [SPEAKER_00]: But these buys can come with a cost for marketers as high return rates force retailers to extend return reimbursement timeframes
[00:01:44] [SPEAKER_00]: To encourage consumers to spend more, the study authors recommend retailers offer free shipping special offers and personalized recommendations
[00:01:57] [SPEAKER_00]: As TikTok heads to court to argue against a US ban, its parent company bite dance is pushing a newer social app
[00:02:04] [SPEAKER_00]: Lemon 8 to the top of the US App Store
[00:02:07] [SPEAKER_00]: This app is often described as a cross between Pinterest and Instagram
[00:02:11] [SPEAKER_00]: And it's seen a surge in downloads, though that's coming mostly from increased advertising
[00:02:15] [SPEAKER_00]: This move appears to be a backup plan in case TikTok is removed from the US market or
[00:02:21] [SPEAKER_00]: Diverested from its Chinese parent company
[00:02:23] [SPEAKER_00]: To achieve its latest ranking, bite dance has invested in a massive Apple search ads campaign using 53 hundred keywords in the past week alone
[00:02:34] [SPEAKER_00]: The company has also been running ads for lemonade on TikTok driving users curiosity
[00:02:39] [SPEAKER_00]: Many TikTok creators are promoting the app on their profiles, some without disclosing if they are being paid to do so
[00:02:46] [SPEAKER_00]: According to app figures, lemonade received 78,000 estimated downloads on Saturday
[00:02:52] [SPEAKER_00]: That's a 44% increase from its average of it last few weeks
[00:02:56] [SPEAKER_00]: The app has seen 16 million global downloads this year with 6.4 million coming from the US
[00:03:06] [SPEAKER_00]: Social media managers rejoice, TikTok is testing a new feature that lets users start over with their in-app video projects by removing all edits and recreating their clips
[00:03:17] [SPEAKER_00]: It's called a delete and re-edit option
[00:03:21] [SPEAKER_00]: It's currently in testing, it would undo any edits made to videos within the app
[00:03:26] [SPEAKER_00]: The feature only applies to edits made within TikTok, so not those made in third party apps like Capcut
[00:03:32] [SPEAKER_00]: But for users who edit and create their clips entirely within the app, this could be a game changer
[00:03:37] [SPEAKER_00]: We would let them easily redo their clips that they come up with a better idea or want to try a different approach after they have published the video
[00:03:45] [SPEAKER_00]: While users can already delete and start again if they have the original video in their camera role, this would make it easier for those who work entirely within the app
[00:03:54] [SPEAKER_00]: TikTok is not yet rolled out a date for the future, but it could be a valuable update for users who primarily edit and create their clips within the app
[00:04:06] [SPEAKER_00]: Meta will start using UK Facebook and Instagram's users public posts to train its AI
[00:04:13] [SPEAKER_00]: The plan was put on hold three months ago because of concerns from the UK data privacy regulators
[00:04:18] [SPEAKER_00]: Meta says it's made changes to its plan to address those concerns, it'll make it easier for users to object to having their data used and give them more time to do so
[00:04:27] [SPEAKER_00]: That option simply doesn't exist at all outside the UK in Europe
[00:04:31] [SPEAKER_00]: The company says it will also display objection forms more prominently on Facebook and Instagram
[00:04:36] [SPEAKER_00]: The UK's Information Commission is offers says it will be watching closely to make sure Meta follows the law
[00:04:42] [SPEAKER_00]: The ICO has not given regulatory approval for Meta's new plan and it's up to Meta to demonstrate ongoing compliance
[00:04:49] [SPEAKER_00]: UK users will start seeing in-app alerts about the model training next week
[00:04:54] [SPEAKER_00]: They will also be given information on how to prevent their data from being processed
[00:04:58] [SPEAKER_00]: The actual AI model training will begin in the next few months
[00:05:02] [SPEAKER_00]: Meta says this will help its AI models reflect British culture and allow UK companies to use the latest technology

[00:06:09] [SPEAKER_00]: Don't just do influence or marketing do it right with popular pays companies with old backup
[00:06:16] [SPEAKER_00]: Listen up. Storage company Iron Mountain says about one fifth of the hard drives its stores from the 1990s are completely unreadable
[00:06:25] [SPEAKER_00]: This is a particularly big problem for the music industry which relies on these archives to store and protect its valuable content
[00:06:34] [SPEAKER_00]: Users and studios are finding that even when they store their hard drives at industry standard temperatures and humidity
[00:06:39] [SPEAKER_00]: They can still fail. There's often no way to recover the data leaving the content lost forever
[00:06:45] [SPEAKER_00]: The problem isn't limited to hard drives other storage formats like optical media, magnetic media and flash storage can also fail over time
[00:06:53] [SPEAKER_00]: And it's unlimited to the music industry any company that has archives on hard disks from the 90s are now said to be at risk
[00:07:02] [SPEAKER_00]: Guys should I feel weird that you all love this AI podcast thing that we're playing at the end of a couple of episodes like
[00:07:09] [SPEAKER_00]: Check your threat and really level with me here
[00:07:13] [SPEAKER_00]: I'm enjoying it as much as you are if you haven't listened the Google came out a couple of days ago with this thing called notebook LM
[00:07:18] [SPEAKER_00]: Or you basically put in some text or our web page we've been feeding it marketing topics on Wikipedia
[00:07:24] [SPEAKER_00]: And it creates a podcast a conversation between two people that really does create job of explaining complicated
[00:07:31] [SPEAKER_00]: Concept so we're gonna do another one at the end of today's episode
[00:07:34] [SPEAKER_00]: It's on marketing mix modeling
[00:07:36] [SPEAKER_00]: But first I want to take you back about five years or so five years ago
[00:07:40] [SPEAKER_00]: I was listening to a great podcast. It's still out there called the Techmeam Ride home, which is just basically a few headlines stories
[00:07:47] [SPEAKER_00]: It's like the top five or six stories in the world of tech and he puts it out every day
[00:07:52] [SPEAKER_00]: And I thought there's got to be one of these shows for the marketing industry right and there wasn't I couldn't find one so I created one five years ago today
[00:08:02] [SPEAKER_00]: The first episode of today in digital marketing came out other than the music it sounds I think pretty much identical to what we ended up with
[00:08:11] [SPEAKER_00]: Here's what the start of the very first episode five years ago today sounded like
[00:08:16] [SPEAKER_00]: It's Monday, September 16th, 2019 I'm proud of math and today Facebook maybe shutting down an important part of the link ads
[00:08:24] [SPEAKER_00]: Link didn't finally joins the live video party and expect another placement in your Facebook ads manager
[00:08:30] [SPEAKER_00]: Good news especially for hyper-local brands here's what you missed today in digital marketing
[00:08:36] [SPEAKER_00]: No it wasn't just you a huge bug on Instagram
[00:08:39] [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah other than kind of a crappy or mic background
[00:08:42] [SPEAKER_00]: It's basically the same so thank you for being part of this. Thank you for listening and in honor of the fifth anniversary
[00:08:48] [SPEAKER_00]: We have a special very rare sale going on for our premium podcast that'll bring you ad free episodes skip to story audio chapters

[00:09:17] [SPEAKER_00]: So if it is after September 23rd when you listen to it, it's too late
[00:09:22] [SPEAKER_00]: All right as promised here is the Google AI thing of magic eat on the topic of marketing mix modeling
[00:09:30] [SPEAKER_03]: Ever feel like companies are whispering a secret code like they're trying to make us buy their stuff
[00:09:36] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, it's like there's this whole hidden world of marketing going on behind the scenes right exactly and today we're cracking that code with marketing mix modeling or mm for those of them now
[00:09:46] [SPEAKER_03]: You've got your notes and articles ready locked and loaded perfect because we're about to take a deep dive into how marketers really measure what works and what doesn't
[00:09:55] [SPEAKER_02]: It's true. There's a whole science behind those ads and promotions we see every day
[00:09:59] [SPEAKER_03]: Okay, so we've all heard of the marketing mix those classic four peas right product price place and promotion
[00:10:05] [SPEAKER_03]: But what's fascinating about mm is it takes those foundational elements adds a layer of hardcore data analysis and helps us see which lovers actually make the cash register
[00:10:16] [SPEAKER_02]: Saying it's like having extra vision into consumer behavior. That's the power of mm
[00:10:21] [SPEAKER_03]: So instead of throwing darts in the dark hoping something sticks it's about making those dated driven decisions
[00:10:28] [SPEAKER_02]: You know getting the biggest bang for your buck exactly and what's interesting is the concept of the marketing mix itself isn't new
[00:10:35] [SPEAKER_02]: Oh really yeah, it actually dates back to the 1940s when a marketing professor named Neil Borden
[00:10:41] [SPEAKER_02]: Neil Borden. Okay. He compared building a marketing strategy to a chef mixing ingredients talk about being ahead of his time right?
[00:10:50] [SPEAKER_02]: Absolutely just like you wouldn't just throw random ingredients together hoping for a delicious meal you end up with a disaster exactly
[00:10:56] [SPEAKER_02]: You need the right proportions the right timing to cook up marketing success
[00:11:01] [SPEAKER_02]: And while those initial four peas product price promotion and place are still the foundation the recipe is definitely got more complex
[00:11:10] [SPEAKER_03]: All right because today it's about so much more than just the product itself. It's about the entire customer journey, right?
[00:11:16] [SPEAKER_03]: Absolutely from the moment they hear about your brand to that satisfying add to cart click and that's where mm swoops in to help us measure the impact of all those touch points for
[00:11:27] [SPEAKER_02]: Precisely. It's about understanding not just that some of bought your product, but what influenced them along the way
[00:11:32] [SPEAKER_02]: Did they see a social media ad grab a coupon walk past your storefront at just the right time mm helps us connect those dots
[00:11:41] [SPEAKER_03]: It's like piecing together a puzzle where each marketing activity is a piece and just like any good puzzle
[00:11:46] [SPEAKER_02]: You need the right tools to solve it in the case of mm that tool is data and lots of it
[00:11:53] [SPEAKER_02]: We're talking sales figures marketing spend even external factors like economic trends or seasonality all of that gets fed into a giant marketing equation
[00:12:02] [SPEAKER_03]: Okay, before we get lost in the weeds of this giant marketing equation let's make this really tangible
[00:12:07] [SPEAKER_03]: You've got some great examples in your research real world scenarios where mm was used to decode what was actually working
[00:12:14] [SPEAKER_02]: Absolutely and many of them hinge on a key distinction
[00:12:18] [SPEAKER_02]: The difference between base sales and incremental sales. Okay, let's break that down for our listener
[00:12:23] [SPEAKER_03]: It's like the difference between a cake that's good on its own versus one that's made even better with frosting right exactly base sales are your baseline
[00:12:31] [SPEAKER_02]: What you'd sell even without any marketing think of it as the inherent appeal of your product or brand
[00:12:37] [SPEAKER_02]: Then you have incremental sales those extra sales driven directly by your marketing efforts like the boost you get from a perfectly targeted ad
[00:12:46] [SPEAKER_03]: So it's about understanding what you would have sold anyway versus what you sold because of your marketing magic and that's where mm gets really powerful right
[00:12:53] [SPEAKER_02]: Absolutely by isolating those incremental sales you can start to see which marketing activities are truly moving the needle and which ones might need a little help
[00:13:02] [SPEAKER_03]: So we've established that mm helps us separate those base sales from the marketing driven ones
[00:13:08] [SPEAKER_03]: But where things get really interesting and where your research gets super insightful is in seeing how mm tackles specific marketing channels
[00:13:17] [SPEAKER_02]: Absolutely, it's one thing to know your marketing is working. Yeah, it's another to pinpoint exactly which levers are packing the biggest punch
[00:13:24] [SPEAKER_02]: And that's where those real world examples you mentioned come in exactly
[00:13:27] [SPEAKER_03]: So let's dive into a big one media and advertising I mean companies poor billions into ads every year
[00:13:32] [SPEAKER_03]: But knowing if they're actually hitting the mark is the million dollar question right. It's true and it's a question mm is uniquely quick to answer
[00:13:39] [SPEAKER_02]: Because it goes beyond just looking at how much you spend on an ad campaign can actually dissect the timing the placement even the creative elements
[00:13:47] [SPEAKER_02]: To see what resonated with your target audience
[00:13:49] [SPEAKER_03]: There's that x-ray vision you were talking about I've got an example here from my notes that blew my mind a little it talks about how mm contract the impact of a single TV ad
[00:13:58] [SPEAKER_02]: It's true imagine you're launching a new energy drink and you've got that edgy late night commercial running mm can analyze sales data alongside those precise ad air times to pinpoint if it's truly resonating with your target demographic
[00:14:13] [SPEAKER_03]: Those night elves looking for a boost so you can actually see if that prime time slot is worth the premium price tag or maybe a shorter punchier ad earlier in the evening would give you more bang for your buck
[00:14:24] [SPEAKER_02]: Exactly, and it's not just about TV of course we can apply this same granular analysis to digital ads print even those billboards you was by in the highway mm can help you see which messages are making people hit the breaks
[00:14:36] [SPEAKER_03]: And which ones are just blending into the background. It's like that old saying have the money I spend on advertising is wasted the trouble is I don't know which half mm to the rescue precisely
[00:14:46] [SPEAKER_02]: It takes the guesswork out of those advertising decisions
[00:14:49] [SPEAKER_02]: But let's not forget about those other marketing tactics that are constantly vying for our attention. Oh, you mean like those tempting
[00:14:56] [SPEAKER_03]: By one get one free offers that somehow always end up in my shopping cards exactly those trade promotions are marketing staple
[00:15:03] [SPEAKER_02]: But their effectiveness can vary wildly. That's where mm comes in to provide some much needed clarity because let's be honest
[00:15:11] [SPEAKER_03]: We've all fallen victim to a good sale, but do those promotions actually drive long-term growth or they just a temporary sugar rush
[00:15:18] [SPEAKER_02]: That's the million dollar question and mm can help us find the answer it can track sales lived during a promotion and compare it to your baseline
[00:15:26] [SPEAKER_03]: So if you normally sell a hundred boxes of cereal a week, but during your 50% off promotion that number jumps to 500 mm at m
[00:15:33] [SPEAKER_02]: Can help you determine if those extra sales are truly worth the discount of price for a slightly and it can also reveal which types of promotions resonate best with your audience
[00:15:41] [SPEAKER_02]: Maybe those flashy displays are eye catching, but it's the coupons that really drive purchases or perhaps a bundled offer is the key to increasing basket size
[00:15:50] [SPEAKER_03]: It's about understanding not just the people are buying, but what's motivating them to do so
[00:15:54] [SPEAKER_03]: Which makes me think about another crucial aspect of marketing pricing even as a consumer
[00:15:59] [SPEAKER_03]: I know a small price change
[00:16:01] [SPEAKER_03]: Even a few cents can make me reconsider a purchase
[00:16:04] [SPEAKER_02]: Absolutely, and that's where mm's ability to measure price elasticity comes into play
[00:16:10] [SPEAKER_02]: It can tell you how sensitive your customers are to price changes giving you valuable insights for optimizing your pricing strategy
[00:16:17] [SPEAKER_03]: We're back with the deep dive exploring the intricate world of marketing mix modeling, you know
[00:16:22] [SPEAKER_03]: Still cracking that marketing code exactly we've seen how it decodes the effectiveness of ads promotions
[00:16:28] [SPEAKER_03]: Even the impact of those tiny price tags
[00:16:31] [SPEAKER_02]: It's amazing what you can learn from a few data points
[00:16:34] [SPEAKER_03]: Right, but just when you thought we'd reached peak marketing intelligence, there's another layer to unravel
[00:16:39] [SPEAKER_02]: Oh, yeah, mm is constantly evolving. It's like it's got this secret weapon. Okay, I'm intrigued laid on me
[00:16:46] [SPEAKER_03]: We call the Bayesian approach Bayesian approach. My notes mentioned something about it being like a constantly updating prediction machine
[00:16:53] [SPEAKER_02]: It's true. It's next level stuff. Think of traditional mm as taking a snapshot
[00:16:59] [SPEAKER_02]: Okay, it's a snapshot of your marketing's impact at a specific moment in time Bayesian mm on the other hand
[00:17:06] [SPEAKER_02]: It's like watching a live video feed. It's constantly learning constantly refining its predictions based on the latest data
[00:17:13] [SPEAKER_03]: So as you feed it new information like maybe a sudden shift in consumer behavior
[00:17:18] [SPEAKER_02]: It adapts exactly makes his model even more accurate and insightful. That's incredible
[00:17:22] [SPEAKER_03]: It's like having a crystal ball that gets clearer the more you use it. I like that crystal ball right
[00:17:27] [SPEAKER_02]: But instead of vague predictions, you get actionable insights and this Bayesian twist
[00:17:32] [SPEAKER_03]: Unlock some incredible benefits. My notes mentioned something about long-term advertising effects
[00:17:38] [SPEAKER_02]: That's a big one. Traditional mm might miss those because it's focused on those immediate results
[00:17:43] [SPEAKER_03]: But we know brand building and customer loyalty those things take time
[00:17:47] [SPEAKER_02]: Exactly Bayesian mm can actually track that impact with impressive accuracy
[00:17:52] [SPEAKER_02]: It's not just about the immediate sales spike after an ad-airs
[00:17:56] [SPEAKER_02]: It's about nurturing those long-term relationships that really drive sustainable growth
[00:18:01] [SPEAKER_03]: And that's what it's all about, right? Sustainable growth
[00:18:03] [SPEAKER_02]: Absolutely. And here's another game changer
[00:18:05] [SPEAKER_02]: Bayesian mm helps you identify those tipping points where more spending doesn't necessarily lead to more sales
[00:18:12] [SPEAKER_03]: Because you can only throw so much money at a campaign at a certain point
[00:18:16] [SPEAKER_03]: You're just, you know
[00:18:17] [SPEAKER_02]: Throwing money away exactly. It's about being smarter, not just bigger with your budget
[00:18:21] [SPEAKER_03]: So you're not just throwing more money at a campaign that's reached its peak effectiveness
[00:18:26] [SPEAKER_03]: You can actually see when it's time to shift gears
[00:18:29] [SPEAKER_03]: Maybe reallocate those dollars to a different channel or try a new creative approach
[00:18:35] [SPEAKER_02]: Data-driven decisions all the way
[00:18:37] [SPEAKER_02]: But and I think this is important to remember
[00:18:39] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah
[00:18:39] [SPEAKER_02]: And I'm even with all this incredible data and analysis
[00:18:42] [SPEAKER_02]: It's not a magic crystal ball
[00:18:45] [SPEAKER_03]: It's not going to predict the future with 100% certainty
[00:18:48] [SPEAKER_02]: Exactly. No guarantees in marketing
[00:18:50] [SPEAKER_03]: So what are some of those limitations we should be aware of?
[00:18:53] [SPEAKER_02]: One key thing is that mm primarily focuses on quantifiable data
[00:18:58] [SPEAKER_02]: Like sales figures and website clicks
[00:19:00] [SPEAKER_02]: Hard numbers
[00:19:01] [SPEAKER_02]: Yes
[00:19:02] [SPEAKER_02]: And it can be trickier to measure those more intangible aspects of marketing
[00:19:06] [SPEAKER_03]: Like how someone feels when they see a logo or hear a jingle
[00:19:09] [SPEAKER_02]: Exactly
[00:19:10] [SPEAKER_02]: Brand perception
[00:19:11] [SPEAKER_02]: Customer satisfaction
[00:19:12] [SPEAKER_02]: Word of mouth buzz
[00:19:14] [SPEAKER_02]: Those things are harder to put a number on
[00:19:16] [SPEAKER_03]: So while mm can give you incredibly valuable insights into what's driving those bottom line results
[00:19:21] [SPEAKER_03]: It's important to use it alongside those other marketing measurement tools
[00:19:25] [SPEAKER_02]: Absolutely
[00:19:26] [SPEAKER_02]: Think of it like having a well stock tool kid
[00:19:29] [SPEAKER_02]: You wouldn't rely on just a hammer to build a house would you?
[00:19:32] [SPEAKER_03]: You need a saw, nails, a level
[00:19:34] [SPEAKER_02]: Right all those tools work together
[00:19:36] [SPEAKER_02]: And mm is just one tool in the marketing arsenal
[00:19:39] [SPEAKER_02]: Powerful tool
[00:19:41] [SPEAKER_02]: Absolutely
[00:19:41] [SPEAKER_02]: But it's most effective when used alongside other forms of analysis
[00:19:46] [SPEAKER_02]: And let's not forget
[00:19:48] [SPEAKER_02]: Good old fashioned human intuition
[00:19:50] [SPEAKER_03]: So it's about bringing all of those perspectives together
