[00:00:01] [SPEAKER_00]: It is Tuesday, September 17th. Today, meta gets updates, affiliate marketing gets challenges,
[00:00:08] [SPEAKER_00]: Blue Sky gets 10 million and deep inside the YouTube trend that's making weather reports trending.
[00:00:17] [SPEAKER_00]: I'm Tod Maffin, that's ahead today in Digital Marketing.
[00:00:23] [SPEAKER_00]: As the holiday marketing season approaches, meta is looking for you to unwrap those ad budgets.
[00:00:28] [SPEAKER_00]: The tech giant announcing several new ad options this week for the end of year push.
[00:00:34] [SPEAKER_00]: First meta is updating its discount code promo options, featuring more visible code notifications that auto apply at checkout.
[00:00:43] [SPEAKER_00]: With the update advertisers will be able to highlight their discount code on an overlay,
[00:00:47] [SPEAKER_00]: but add, making it easier for consumers to use the code.
[00:00:51] [SPEAKER_00]: The platform is also testing first purchase offers and personalized discounts,
[00:00:55] [SPEAKER_00]: and bringing these features to Instagram reels as well.
[00:01:00] [SPEAKER_00]: Reminder ads are also getting a facelift with overlay prompts on feed posts,
[00:01:04] [SPEAKER_00]: meta says it's also increasing the frequency of reminder notifications to maximize awareness.
[00:01:10] [SPEAKER_00]: The company is also updating its site links option, which lets brands add multiple landing pages to a single image or video ad in the Facebook feed.
[00:01:18] [SPEAKER_00]: And they've got a new promotion type that targets users more likely to shop in store based on their engagement history and location tracking.
[00:01:29] [SPEAKER_00]: And finally, meta's introducing a new way to target tourists planning holiday trips to your area.
[00:01:34] [SPEAKER_00]: For example, if users are searching for local holiday activities or engaging with relevant social content,
[00:01:41] [SPEAKER_00]: they might start receiving ads from nearby businesses looking to boost seasonal sales.
[00:01:50] [SPEAKER_00]: Affiliate marketers are facing a growing challenge catering to picky consumers who demand more value from their online deals.
[00:01:58] [SPEAKER_00]: This shift is creating a tough environment for advertisers and publishers according to a new report from eMarketer.
[00:02:04] [SPEAKER_00]: Sophisticated shoppers have been key to the affiliate marketing game for years,
[00:02:08] [SPEAKER_00]: but the report notes that as the industry gains visibility, these shoppers are getting choosier.
[00:02:14] [SPEAKER_00]: With the growth of affiliate marketing many consumers are now more selective comparing deals rather than sticking to one retailer.
[00:02:22] [SPEAKER_00]: EMarketer's research found that affiliate marketing ranks among the top forms of online advertising to put that in perspective over the past year,
[00:02:31] [SPEAKER_00]: 55% of respondents recalled seeing affiliate ads on websites.
[00:02:36] [SPEAKER_00]: That's about 10% higher than those who notice ads on search engines.
[00:02:41] [SPEAKER_00]: According to the report, this increased visibility has led consumers to shop around rather than buying something based on recommendations from trusted creators or publishers.
[00:02:52] [SPEAKER_00]: In response, most brands are enhancing their offers.
[00:02:55] [SPEAKER_00]: For example, in the first half of this year, one third of influencer affiliate conversions included coupons.
[00:03:02] [SPEAKER_00]: That's up from just 9% the previous year.
[00:03:05] [SPEAKER_00]: We have the marketers full report on affiliate marketing for 2024.
[00:03:09] [SPEAKER_00]: In today's email newsletter, just tap the link at the top of the show notes or go to today in digital.com slash newsletter.
[00:03:20] [SPEAKER_00]: The Twitter competitor, Blue Sky, just hit the 10 million user mark.
[00:03:24] [SPEAKER_00]: A little help from Elon Musk's ex getting banned in Brazil apparently did the trick.
[00:03:29] [SPEAKER_00]: Last month, Brazil's top-court shutdown ex and slapped fines on regular VPN users trying to dodge the ban.
[00:03:37] [SPEAKER_00]: In the wake of this, Blue Sky and met his threads shot up the charts in Brazil,
[00:03:43] [SPEAKER_00]: landing in the top 10 of both App Store and Play Store ratings.
[00:03:47] [SPEAKER_00]: Blue Sky snatched up 3 million users within days post ban,
[00:03:51] [SPEAKER_00]: soaring past 9 million overall earlier this month.
[00:03:54] [SPEAKER_00]: The company said more than 85% of new users were from Brazil.
[00:04:00] [SPEAKER_00]: So that's 10 million members now on Blue Sky threads.
[00:04:03] [SPEAKER_00]: It's met at own competitor now has more than 200 million.
[00:04:12] [SPEAKER_00]: Snapchat users selfies aren't dust for cloud, but also a potential ad campaign.
[00:04:17] [SPEAKER_00]: Snapchat provides terms of service now let the company use its users faces in ads.
[00:04:24] [SPEAKER_00]: The terms of service are for it's my selfie tool which lets users and their friends create AI generated images based on photos they share with the app.
[00:04:32] [SPEAKER_00]: When using the feature for the first time, Snapchat asks users to agree to these terms.
[00:04:38] [SPEAKER_00]: You also acknowledge and agree that by using my selfie, you or your likeness may appear in personalized sponsored content
[00:04:46] [SPEAKER_00]: and ads that will be visible only to you and that includes branding or other advertising content of snap or its business partners without compensation to you.
[00:04:59] [SPEAKER_00]: The users can opt out of the option by toggling off the C my selfie in ads feature, but for a 4 media reports today that this feature is on by default.
[00:05:09] [SPEAKER_00]: While snap may use your face in personalized ads, the company says it doesn't share your data with third party advertisers.
[00:05:17] [SPEAKER_00]: According to a spokesperson from the company, advertisers don't have access to snapchatters, AI generated images or private data and that it isn't currently using my selfies in advertising.
[00:05:33] [SPEAKER_00]: Another piece of advice to not trust Google's AI, especially if you're using it to search for images for your ad campaigns or social media posts.
[00:05:42] [SPEAKER_00]: Google's top results for one of the most famous paintings in history features a fake AI generated version of the artwork.
[00:05:49] [SPEAKER_00]: For a 4 media report, it yesterday that when users searched for her runny as botch on Google, the top image they saw was an AI generated version of his iconic garden of earthly delights.
[00:06:01] [SPEAKER_00]: Google search often displays a carousel of images above the usual links based on user queries.
[00:06:06] [SPEAKER_00]: When user on X discovered that when people searched for Bosch on Google, the search results included a couple of images from the actual painting.
[00:06:14] [SPEAKER_00]: But the first and largest image displayed was an AI generated version of it.
[00:06:20] [SPEAKER_00]: Quitting 4 or 4 media quote, the search results for heronious Bosch is now just another example of a well established problem on the internet and for Google search specifically.
[00:06:29] [SPEAKER_00]: As AI tools become more common and easy to access, the internet is being flooded with AI generated content that Google's automated systems are processing and then presenting to millions of users as if it was real unquote.
[00:06:44] [SPEAKER_00]: Google has since removed that AI atrocity from its search results.
[00:06:52] [SPEAKER_00]: Should your brand's next viral marketing campaign be a weather video?
[00:06:56] [SPEAKER_00]: YouTube, it seems, is buzzing with hours long loops of 80s and 90s weather channel broadcasts set to dreamy vaporware beats.
[00:07:10] [SPEAKER_00]: If your project is at the ocean, the river or the lake stay tuned for the Bosch and be true for it in 20 after.
[00:07:16] [SPEAKER_00]: This vaporware trend which pairs vintage weather clips with low-fime music has become a cozy kind of eerie way to remember a time before the climate crisis.
[00:07:28] [SPEAKER_00]: Some of the most popular weather wave clips use a VHS recording of a weather channel broadcast on a random cold 90s night in the winter.
[00:07:35] [SPEAKER_00]: 141 minute video has nearly 900,000 views.
[00:07:41] [SPEAKER_00]: Another is an 8 hour long mega mood with nearly 650,000 views.
[00:07:49] [SPEAKER_00]: So next time you think you need a break from the hustle, just hit play and travel to a more nostalgic era.

[00:08:53] [SPEAKER_00]: They'll just do influence or marketing do it right with popular pays.
[00:08:59] [SPEAKER_00]: I had a really weird experience today.
[00:09:02] [SPEAKER_00]: I was out getting some art supplies and pins of crayons that's like these art pencil crayons anyway it's irrelevant what I was getting but I realized that I'm now asking people questions as if they are AI and I need to form my question in the form of a prompt.
[00:09:19] [SPEAKER_00]: My friends and sees these pencil crayons they're very fancy they're very nice and they require I assumed a special kind of pencil sharpener.
[00:09:28] [SPEAKER_00]: It's rather than saying what pencil sharpener should I use?
[00:09:32] [SPEAKER_00]: I said something like, what are the best two pencil sharpeners to use for this purpose and are there any brands that I should avoid based on what previous people have said.
[00:09:42] [SPEAKER_00]: Or something like that and the woman in this mild and said, well that's a very specific question isn't this.
[00:09:51] [SPEAKER_00]: And I realized yes it's very specific in fact it's the way that I would freeze something if I were asking an AI bot so I don't know is that good or bad I did get a great answer back from her.
[00:10:02] [SPEAKER_00]: So maybe this secret is to just treat people like AI maybe we've been doing this all backwards we've been trying to treat our AI like people maybe everything should just be AI.
[00:10:11] [SPEAKER_00]: I don't know has the world look on that backwards? Probably.
[00:10:16] [SPEAKER_00]: Alright thanks for listening see you tomorrow.
