[00:00:00] It is Thursday, May 23rd.
[00:00:03] Today two big players in the design space have a new offering for large brands and agencies.
[00:00:09] Snapchat has a new cappy partnership.
[00:00:11] Yes, Bing was offline today.
[00:00:14] And Google's deal with the devil.
[00:00:16] What happens when you use the world's largest shitposting forum as a main AI training source?
[00:00:23] Exactly what you think.
[00:00:25] I'm Tod Maffin.
[00:00:26] That's ahead, today in Digital Marketing.
[00:00:31] Two big marketing design tools entered the enterprise arena this week.
[00:00:35] First Adobe announced an enterprise tier for Express, its content tool that most people
[00:00:39] use for social media posts.
[00:00:41] The new hub will let teams get access to a shared brand library and is of course
[00:00:45] connected to Acrobat, Creative Cloud and other Adobe products.
[00:00:49] It uses Firefly Image Model 3 as its AI foundation and it will also be getting
[00:00:54] an integration with the forthcoming AI tool set they're calling Gen Studio.
[00:00:59] Firefly lets users give the engine reference images like existing product shots that you
[00:01:04] already have and use those as the base for new images that it generates.
[00:01:09] Perhaps of more interest to the large company managers, the enterprise tier will have some
[00:01:13] indemnification from IP claims when using Firefly.
[00:01:17] And today Canva also launched its own enterprise tier.
[00:01:21] There's a new admin center which lets managers hand out more precise access right
[00:01:26] down to which specific assets and templates they can see.
[00:01:29] And like Adobe, this tier provides some level of indemnification for AI generated content.
[00:01:39] Snapchat has partnered with data management platform, Telium, to simplify data collection
[00:01:44] for Snapchat campaigns using that platform's conversions API.
[00:01:48] This partnership lets Telium access customer data in real time from various sources,
[00:01:53] both online and offline.
[00:01:55] This should help new advertisers implement the conversions API quickly without needing
[00:01:59] a custom backend integration.
[00:02:02] Quoting social media today,
[00:02:03] quote, it could be a good way to improve your Snap campaign performance by using
[00:02:07] more data points to inform your approach.
[00:02:09] Indeed, Telium says that its partnerships can reduce cost per acquisition, improve
[00:02:15] ROAS and deliver anywhere from 5 to 25% average increase in observable conversions.
[00:02:21] It seems like a good deal for both Snap and Telium, with Snap looking to put more focus
[00:02:25] on building its ad business and Telium building its partnerships, making it a more valuable
[00:02:31] source for conversions data solutions, unquote.
[00:02:38] Microsoft's search engine Bing was down today, which means it actually took down
[00:02:42] other search engines too, since Bing also powers Chat GPT Search, Copilot in Windows,
[00:02:49] DuckDuckGo and other sites.
[00:02:51] And perhaps this is a coincidence, but much of the ad platform was having issues for a
[00:02:55] while today as well.
[00:02:57] This all happened starting around 5 o'clock Eastern time.
[00:03:00] Trying to search would get you Bing's version of the Fail Whale, which, for the record,
[00:03:05] is a clipart of a sad panda looking at an ice cream cone that it just dropped.
[00:03:10] Microsoft says they've got it restored, but at our deadline there were still hundreds
[00:03:14] of reports coming in to down detector.
[00:03:17] Blue Sky, one of the many sites that sprung up to fill the void Twitter left, has added
[00:03:24] direct messages to its platform, one of the most requested features.
[00:03:28] It's not a particularly smart DM though, for now you can only send text messages,
[00:03:33] it won't take images, it won't take videos, though they say they're working on both
[00:03:37] of those.
[00:03:38] You should find a new chat icon in the left nav bar on desktop and on the bottom
[00:03:42] of mobile.
[00:03:43] You can create a global setting the first time you navigate there to let anyone DM
[00:03:47] you, or let only people you follow DM you, or prevent anyone from sending you one.
[00:03:53] If you've blocked someone in the past they won't be able to DM you at all regardless
[00:03:56] of this setting, but if you've only muted someone they will be able to.
[00:04:00] Also important to know these are not end-to-end encrypted, meaning the Blue Sky's admins
[00:04:06] can see your messages if they want, and they even went out of their way to tell
[00:04:09] users that they might peer in from time to time if they think something nefarious
[00:04:13] is going down.
[00:04:15] Blue Sky got off to a slow start thanks partially to its invitation only onboarding.
[00:04:19] They opened it up publicly in February which provided a big but short-lived spike of activity.
[00:04:25] Since then, engagement on the platform has been steadily slowing.
[00:04:33] And finally, the ink isn't even dry on the contract Reddit signed to hand its users
[00:04:38] content over to Google's AI.
[00:04:41] That contract said to be worth $60 million to Reddit.
[00:04:44] So how's it going?
[00:04:46] Oh you know, usual things.
[00:04:49] Like AI making up completely inaccurate and dangerous recommendations.
[00:04:52] 404 Media Today reported on one example where a user asked for advice to help cheese
[00:04:58] stick to a pizza they were making, and Google's fancy pants new AI-powered search
[00:05:03] summary recommended to just add glue.
[00:05:08] Not food glue or an edible binder like cornstarch, no literally glue.
[00:05:14] Turns out the AI got this from a Reddit post more than a decade old posted by a scholarly
[00:05:19] chap named Fuxmith.
[00:05:22] Fuxmith posted quote,
[00:05:23] To get the cheese to stick I recommend mixing about an eighth of a cup of Elmer's
[00:05:27] glue in with the sauce.
[00:05:29] It'll give the sauce a little extra tackiness and your cheese sliding issue will go away.
[00:05:34] It'll also add a little unique flavor.
[00:05:36] I like Elmer's school glue but any glue will work as long as it's non-toxic.
[00:05:41] That of course made its way through Reddit's API, across some servers, through hell itself
[00:05:47] and then got ingested into Google's search AI which spat out this advice quote,
[00:05:52] You can also add about an eighth of a cup of non-toxic glue to the sauce to give
[00:05:56] it more tackiness.
[00:05:58] Quoting 404 Media,
[00:05:59] Quote,
[00:06:00] Screenshots of Google's AI search going awry have gone repeatedly viral and highlight
[00:06:05] how hell bent the company is on giving its customers the most frustrating possible
[00:06:11] user experience while casually destroying the livelihoods of people who work for or
[00:06:15] make websites.
[00:06:16] They also highlight the fact that Google's AI is not a magical fountain of new knowledge,
[00:06:21] it is reassembled content from things humans posted in the past, indiscriminately scraped
[00:06:27] from the internet and sometimes remixed to look like something plausibly new and
[00:06:32] intelligent.
[00:06:33] A joke that people made when Reddit and Google announced their data sharing agreement
[00:06:38] was that Reddit would become dumber and or poisoned by scraping various Reddit shitposts
[00:06:44] and would eventually regurgitate them to the internet.
[00:06:48] Giving people the verbatim wisdom of fucksmith as a legitimate answer to a basic cooking
[00:06:52] question shows that Google's AI is actually being poisoned by random shit people say
[00:06:59] on the internet.
[00:07:00] It is an indictment of Google's artificial intelligence, not of Reddit nor of the
[00:07:06] internet's shit posters.
[00:07:08] I'm good.
[00:07:11] So we had a bit of a puppy crisis earlier today.
[00:07:14] We adopted a puppy about what maybe a week and a half ago now.
[00:07:17] She's seven months old.
[00:07:18] She's a delight.
[00:07:19] She's adorable.
[00:07:19] She is the cutest puppy in the world.
[00:07:21] Yes, even cuter than yours.
[00:07:23] However, she eats everything.
[00:07:26] Like, is this a puppy thing that we were not briefed?
[00:07:28] She eats everything or tries to anyway.
[00:07:31] We have a cat.
[00:07:32] This eating everything policy apparently applies to the cat's litter because we have
[00:07:37] caught her in there more than a few times eating the litter.
[00:07:43] Now, we use like a clumping litter, you know, like most cat owners do.
[00:07:47] A couple of days ago, we realized that the puppy had stopped pooping.
[00:07:50] I took her out once and she tried.
[00:07:52] She started straining and we thought, oh, God, of course, you know, she's she's
[00:07:58] eaten the litter.
[00:07:58] The litter has clumped in her bowels and and now she's going to be sick.
[00:08:03] The thing is, she was fine though.
[00:08:04] She was still happy and wagging her tail and jumping around and acting all puppy
[00:08:08] like and not barfing and mostly eating food still and all that.
[00:08:11] But days went by and she hadn't pooped.
[00:08:14] So we took her to the vet this morning.
[00:08:16] The vet was like, I don't know.
[00:08:17] I don't really see that much.
[00:08:18] I mean, sure, keep her away from from the cat's litter.
[00:08:21] But I don't know.
[00:08:23] It doesn't seem that bad.
[00:08:25] So took her home.
[00:08:27] That is when we discovered that she has found a new place to poop inside,
[00:08:32] behind the couch in my wife's office.
[00:08:34] So she was fine all along.
[00:08:39] Anyway, on an unrelated note, if you are looking for a puppy
[00:08:42] about seven months old and can pick up from Canada, inquire within.
[00:08:46] I'm kidding. We love her.
[00:08:47] I'm keeping her.
[00:08:48] We're not keeping our sanity, but we're keeping her.
[00:08:51] I'm Todd Mappin. Thanks for listening.
[00:08:53] See you tomorrow.
[00:08:58] For years, you asked yourself, how do I save more money?
[00:09:02] But now it's how do I preserve my money?
[00:09:05] Someone's asking the right questions.

[00:09:32] Today's review, the hotter, juicier, classic burgers.
[00:09:36] Mr. Hamburgler.
[00:09:37] Rubble, rubble.
[00:09:38] He said of all the McDonald's burgers I've ever hamburgled,
[00:09:42] these are the hottest, juiciest and tastiest.
[00:09:45] Rubble.
